The Albert Canal serves as Flanders’ most economically vital waterway infrastructure, annually handling freight volume equivalent to approximately 2 million truck transits. Its modernization is part of a larger program to enhance the canal’s capacity and efficiency. This upgrade aims to increase maritime transport capacity while further alleviating pressure on the surrounding road network.
The existing bridge over the canal at Turnhoutsebaan, also known as the ”banana bridge”, is being replaced with two specialized structures – a dedicated road bridge several hundred meters west of the current location, and a separate bicycle and pedestrian bridge located almost at that location after the demolition of the existing bridge.
Splendid led the final design phase of this significant infrastructure project. Our team of four structural engineers delivered comprehensive 3D models and detailed 2D plans. The project’s success stemmed from our implementation of custom automation tools that enhanced workflow efficiency, combined with exceptional technical precision and collaborative engagement with the client throughout the development process.
