The Steenbrugge Bridge project addresses critical mobility challenges on Bruges’ southern outskirts, where the current narrow bridge creates significant traffic bottlenecks. This strategic infrastructure initiative aims to enhance both maritime shipping capacity and roadway efficiency in the Bruges metropolitan area while preserving the natural heritage of the region.

Following a 2014 Urban Navigation study, a fixed, tall bridge for road traffic and a movable, flat bridge for cyclists and pedestrians will replace the outdated structure over the Gent-Oostende canal. The project also eliminates the problematic S-curve that forces difficult navigational maneuvers, reconfiguring the waterway toward Baron Ruzettelaan to improve vessel transit safety.

Our structural engineering team developed comprehensive BIM models for both bridges, enabling seamless coordination and generating precise 2D construction plans for implementation. The innovative structural design incorporates a slim road deck with open approach ramps, creating a light, spacious aesthetic that enhances the canal landscape while ensuring robust structural performance.

Complementing these technical solutions, our visualization specialists created detailed still images, videos, and VR content that allowed community stakeholders to experience the completed project before construction began. These visual tools facilitated public engagement and built support for this significant mobility enhancement initiative.
