The Oosterweel Island is undergoing comprehensive infrastructure redevelopment to optimize traffic flow and enhance safety across multiple transportation modes. This complex project addresses critical infrastructure needs through the replacement of aging bridges, the implementation of new traffic patterns, and the creation of dedicated pathways for different transport types.
At the core of this initiative is the replacement of the deteriorating Wilmarsdonk and Oosterweel bridges. Two new mobile bridges will accommodate rail traffic at the Wilmarsdonk location, designed to minimize disruption to inland navigation by operating only during train passage. Meanwhile, the Oosterweel bridge will be reconstructed as a fixed, tall structure with sufficient clearance for high-load barges, eliminating navigation bottlenecks while supporting dedicated lanes for vehicles and cyclists.
The project introduces significant improvements to the island’s circulation network through:
- Development of a new northern rail corridor with dual tracks from Noorderlaan bridge to Oosterweelsteenweg
- Strategic track divergence with eastern connection across Vollers site and integration with existing rail infrastructure via an underpass
- Maintenance of Oosterweelsteenweg as the primary vehicular artery with enhanced cycling infrastructure
- Construction of a new connector road linking Oosterweelsteenweg and Schenkeldijk
- Comprehensive drainage improvements and roadway reconstruction along Wilmarsdonksteenweg and Oosterweelsteenweg
- Elimination of rail-road intersections on the island’s northern section
- Preservation of Noordkasteel bridges with continued multi-modal access
Our team developed integrated solutions for street networks, parking facilities, access points, pedestrian walkways, bicycle lanes, and critical intersections. The design scope included comprehensive utility network planning to ensure seamless integration with existing systems.
Through BIM-integrated project management, we maintained exceptional coordination across all infrastructure components while our structural engineering expertise informed the technical specifications for various project elements.
Our detailed technical drawings provided precise guidance for construction implementation, ensuring that all design parameters were accurately translated from concept to reality.
