The Oosterweel connection represents a landmark infrastructure initiative designed to complete and reimagine Antwerp’s Ring Road system. This transformative project is meant to create a harmonious integration between urban mobility and quality of life.

At its core, the project introduces critical new crossing points including a motorway tunnel beneath the Scheldt River, connecting the Left and Right Banks on the city’s northern edge. Additional tunnels beneath the Amerikadok and Albert Canal create seamless connections to the existing Ring, while extensive covering and lowering of roadways reclaims valuable urban space for community use.

The initiative prioritizes sustainable mobility through the integration of 35 kilometers of new cycling infrastructure and strategic Park & Ride facilities, encouraging multimodal transportation solutions. By moving vehicular traffic underground through tunneling and covering, the project liberates surface areas for parks, recreation spaces, and pedestrian corridors. This approach transforms the Ring from a divisive barrier between districts into a connecting element that enhances urban cohesion while supporting regional economic development.

Splendid contributed comprehensive expertise during the critical pre-design phase, deploying integrated teams across multiple disciplines. Our Roads & Utilities specialists collaborated seamlessly with our Architectural & Structural engineers to deliver sophisticated BIM models encompassing highways, tunnels, ancillary structures, landscaping elements, and water management systems. This collaborative approach ensured full-integration design across all infrastructure components. Our Automation Design experts developed customized digital tools and workflows that significantly enhanced project efficiency, particularly in earthworks analysis, quantity takeoffs, cost estimation, and compliance verification.

Additionally, our Visualization team supported stakeholder engagement by creating compelling rendered images and videos that effectively communicated the project’s transformative impact to diverse audiences.
