The historic Vierendeel bridges spanning the Leuvense Vaart have been iconic landmarks in Mechelen’s station area for nearly a century. As part of an extensive infrastructure program, the third and final double-track bridge in this series is currently being renovated. This historic structure, dating from 1935, is undergoing meticulous restoration for creating complementary road infrastructure that honors this heritage while meeting contemporary mobility needs.

Central to our work is the OV-brug, designed to replace the current Postzegelbrug over the Leuven-Dijle Canal. This steel bridge achieves engineering efficiency through a slender profile that creates visual harmony with adjacent historic structures. It accommodates two traffic lanes, a dedicated bus lane, and paths for cyclists and pedestrians, connecting the Europalaan, Trap-Inofer site, and Stationsplein.

Our team provided specialized engineering services for the road infrastructure components associated with this significant transportation hub renovation. We delivered complete BIM management for the road network design, focusing on creating efficient traffic flows and safe intersections that integrate with the historic bridge corridor. The scope encompassed detailed road and intersection engineering, precise earthwork calculations, and contextual landscape design that respects the area’s heritage value.

Our civil structural engineering expertise was applied to the roadway infrastructure elements, ensuring seamless integration with the broader transportation network. The project benefited from our detailed drawing production services throughout both pre-design and final design phases. Additionally, our team provided technical support for the construction permit application process, facilitating regulatory compliance and project advancement.
